Wheatland Electric wishes to congratulate Tamara Rodriguez, junior at Scott Community High School, and Judson Hibbs, junior at Norwich High School. These two outstanding students were selected to serve as the delegates to represent Wheatland Electric at a statewide leadership conference this summer. Upon completion of the conference, they will also receive a $1,000 scholarship.

After completing an online application, including written essay about what they believe to be the most important attributes of a leader, Rodriguez and Hibbs were selected as finalists, and then as the two winners by the Wheatland Electric Board of Trustees.

“Many different attributes can be beneficial for a leader. However, the abilities to learn and teach are the principal qualities of a leader. Knowledge is a powerful tool, as those who continue to gain and share their knowledge are the ones who should and do lead this world,” wrote Hibbs.

On leadership, Rodriguez writes, “leaders have to be able to stick to their goals despite the hurdles they might encounter. They have to have a good work ethic and be willing to challenge themselves and the world.”

An interactive experience, the Kansas Electric Youth (KEY) Leadership Conference will be held in a virtual setting this year, providing Rodriquez and Hibbs with leadership learning opportunities, engaging speakers, and dynamic activities.

For more than 60 years, electric cooperatives across Kansas have recognized outstanding high schoolers by providing a valuable leadership experience for exceptional teens. Networking is always a big part of our cooperative youth programs, as delegates connect with other like-minded, high-achieving youth. Through the 2021 virtual leadership experience, our selected students can get to know their peers across the state through mentor groups and off-line chats.

In addition to the virtual conference and local scholarship, our two delegates will also be eligible to apply for an annual $1,000 state scholarship and a $10,000 national scholarship, only available to Youth Tour alumni!
