Safety starts with education. We invest in our communities by teaching the public, particularly youth and agricultural professionals, how to safely live and work around electricity through hands-on programs and demonstrations.
Our educational programs utilize hands-on, high-impact demonstrations to illustrate the dangers of high-voltage electricity and best safety practices.
Our high-voltage safety demonstration trailer is an open, mobile setup that features actual electrical equipment, including poles, wires, transformers, and meters. This dramatic demonstration shows participants:
For a closer, school-friendly or other indoor setting, we offer a table-top safety demonstration model.
Using a small replica of a farm or neighborhood, our trained lineworkers demonstrate the safe use of electricity, particularly around agricultural settings, and reinforce crucial safety habits for students and other civic or community organizations.
We bring vehicles from our cooperative fleet — along with knowledgeable safety experts — to community events, giving attendees an up-close look at the specialized trucks and equipment our lineworkers use to maintain your electric service. These hands-on experiences are a great way for families and children to learn how electricity is safely delivered to their homes and businesses.
The showcase includes bucket trucks and other operational vehicles, as well as our two all-electric vehicles: a 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric and a 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning. Both vehicles are available for test drives upon request and are frequently featured at Ride+Drive events, especially during National Drive Electric Month (September–October).
In 2021, WECI celebrated a major milestone with the opening of an innovative outdoor green space at its new Great Bend office. Designed as a hands-on educational area, the space features off-grid solar panels, a wind turbine, battery storage, and a rainwater recovery system that helps power outdoor lighting. The green space showcases how renewable energy and conservation can benefit our communities while supporting reliable electric service.
This outdoor learning area reflects our commitment to balancing environmental stewardship with competitively-priced electricity. School and community groups of all ages are encouraged to visit, explore the self-guided displays, or schedule a guided tour (memberservices@weci.net). Age-appropriate educational programs are also available students of all ages on a first-come, first-served basis.
We are happy to provide safety demonstrations, presentations, and tours for schools, safety days, fire departments, civic organizations, and agricultural groups within our service territory.
