Call Before You Dig

Always call 811 before you dig to avoid hitting underground utility lines. Protect yourself, your property, and your community — it’s smart, it's safe, and it's the law.

Stop! Call 811 Before You Dig

Whether you’re a homeowner planting a tree or a contractor beginning a major project, hitting an underground utility line can cause serious injury, costly damage, and service outages. In our service territory across Kansas and Colorado, you must CALL 811 before you dig!

How to Request a Line Locate

Dialing 811 connects you to your local One Call Center, which coordinates with all member utility companies—including Wheatland Electric—to mark public underground lines on your property.

  • Call: Dial 811 (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week).
  • Timing: Call at least 48 hours before you plan to begin any digging project.
  • Preparation: Be ready to provide specific details about your project and worksite.

What Happens Next?

After you call 811, utility owners (like Wheatland Electric, gas companies, cable providers, etc.) will send personnel to mark the location of their buried lines using paint or flags. This process ensures all publicly owned underground facilities are clearly visible for safe digging.

Remember: Underground facilities include more than just electric lines. You could hit natural gas, water, or fiber optic communication lines. Always call 811 to protect yourself, your property, and the essential infrastructure serving your community.
