Volunteer in the New Year to Make a Positive Impact

All News

With the new year just around the corner, we can’t help but reflect on this past year and the gratitude we feel for our communities. This year has been a year like no other. But while we’ve seen our share of challenges, we are heartened by the ways in which we have all pulled together to make our communities stronger.

At Wheatland Electric Cooperative Inc., we recently wrapped up our 2020 Cram the Van season and will be sharing total food donations raised in our communities with you next week and in our January edition of Kansas Country Living. In addition, our employees recently helped fulfill Christmas wish lists for nearly 100 children through Saint Francis Ministries’ Angel Tree program. While these efforts are focused around the holidays, our concern for community is a year-round endeavor.

Because we are a co-op, volunteerism and giving back are a part of who we are. Many of our co-op employees, members like yourself, coach youth sports, assist in school events, or serve on local boards. We look at volunteerism as an investment in our community and a gift that keeps on giving. While it’s difficult to quantify the impact that volunteers have, we do know they make a tremendous difference in our communities and make our corner of the world a better place.

Many organizations depend on volunteers to fulfill their mission. Volunteers fill in gaps and spread joy and compassion through their efforts. Even assisting with the smallest tasks can make a big impact in the lives of people, animals or an organization in need. Often a big commitment or special skills are not needed, just someone who cares.

As we ring in the new year, we hope you’ll consider volunteering for a local cause that lifts up your community. Give a group or cause that you care about the gift of your compassion, time, and talent in the new year. Not only will you enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you are helping a great cause, you will likely make new friends, expand your social network, strengthen your existing skills, or even learn a new ones.

At the end of the day, the gift of volunteerism is a gift that will continue giving all year long. So, as we ring in the new year, consider starting a new tradition –– the gift of time.
