Holcomb, Kan. – Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) announced today that the Holcomb High School Reading Interventions program has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the WEC Sharing Success Fund to help purchase new reading intervention supplies.
The reading intervention program is designed to help support students develop and reach grade-level reading skills. Now in its second year, it combines science-backed reading methods with engaging strategies to help students improve their literacy skills and develop a lifelong love of reading. Students receive instruction in small groups and one-on-one settings, creating a supportive and focused learning environment.
Last year, 77% of participating students improved by at least two grade levels in reading and nine students graduated from the program reaching grade-level benchmarks. The program not only helps students reach these goals, but also improves their scores in other classes, apply for jobs, practice public speaking and try new things. The grant will help purchase essential classroom supplies such as book sets, dry erase boards and markers, card games, and classroom seating.
The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the WEC Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Since then, the application process has been moved internally and is currently handled directly by WEC. This year, WEC and CoBank have once again each contributed $10,000 to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, WEC’s Sharing Success Fund has made $195,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across their service territory.
Community based organizations interested in receiving funding from the WEC Sharing Success Fund can apply online. Questions should be referred to Alli Conine, director of member services and corporate communications, at 620-874-4563 or aconine@weci.net.
