Harper, Kan.–Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) announced today that the Harper City Historical Society has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the WEC Sharing Success Fund to help fund a much-needed HVAC system in the Harper Museum. This upgrade is a critical step in preserving the community's heritage and improving public access to its rich collection.
For over a decade, the museum has operated without air conditioning and with only limited heat. This lack of climate control has not only endangered delicate historical artifacts and the museum building itself but also forced the cancellation of events and limited access for researchers and school tours.
Climate control is more than a comfort issue. Artifacts are deteriorating, and without temperature regulation, staff can only work during mild weather. Proper heating and cooling will also enable the museum to welcome the public year-round.
The total cost of the new system is estimated at $16,000. The Historical Society is actively seeking private donations and matching grants to meet the goal. Once installed, the system will allow for expanded programming, more frequent tours, and better care of irreplaceable items.
Founded in 1961, the Harper City Historical Society operates the Harper Museum, the adjacent storage building, and Runnymede Church. All are preserved and maintained by this dedicated nonprofit. The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the WEC Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Since then, the application process has been moved internally and is currently handled directly by WEC. This year, WEC and CoBank have once again each contributed $10,000 to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, WEC’s Sharing Success Fund has made $165,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across their service territory.
