SCOTT CITY–We are excited to announce that the winner of Wheatland Electric Cooperative Inc.’s Giving Goodness Charity Challenge this year is Family Crisis Services, Inc.
The non-profit organization based in Garden City, which serves six southwest Kansas counties (Finney, Hamilton, Scott, Lane, Greeley, Kearny, and Wichita) provides education and empowerment-based services to the public and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Family Crisis Services is the recipient of a $1,000 Sharing Success grant through the Giving Goodness charity challenge. The organization was championed by Wheatland Electric’s cooperative membership and Facebook fans and followers through multiple rounds of online voting during the contest held entirely on social media from Oct. 24 through Nov. 10, 2022.
In addition, three other Giving Goodness finalists in our online contest also received Sharing Success grants.
They include the Finney County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), which received a $500 grant for its Santas for Senior project; Spirit of the Plains, CASA, located in Garden City, which serves the 25th Judicial District and received a $250 grant; and the Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center, headquartered in Scott City and serving 34 western Kansas counties, which also received $250.
To engage our membership and promote two of our seven cooperative principles, we turned the decision-making power over to our membership for the third year in a row during this grant selection process.
Throughout the online contest, our co-op members and other Facebook followers were encouraged to nominate and vote for a deserving non-profit or other charitable community-based organization within our service territory and rally friends and family to do the same.
Now, more than ever during this holiday season, we recognize the importance of helping one another, giving thanks, and paying it forward.
That’s because cooperatives like us are governed by core principles, including democratic member control and concern for community. The first endorses active member participation in the future and direction of our cooperative. And the second promotes our work for the sustainable development of our communities through policies supported by our membership.
We want to thank all our members who helped us share the “GOODNESS” during this “GIVING” season and helped us select these four Sharing Success grant recipients.
About Sharing Success
The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the Wheatland Electric Sharing Success Fund from non-profit organizations on December 1, 2012. Since that time, more than $100,000 in grants have been awarded across Wheatland’s service territory. This year, Wheatland Electric and CoBank have each contributed $10,000 toward this fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted.
