New Syracuse North Substation Project
(Completed in 2004)

In 2003, Wheatland Electric began the process of constructing a new substation north of Syracuse, Kansas. The new substation was designed to replace two existing substations in the immediate area. The older substations were served by a less reliable, 69,000 volt transmission system. The old substations also utilized several large transformers that contained PCB material. The Environmental Protection Agency considers PCB contaminated transformer oil to be hazardous if released into the environment.

The new substation would be served by a more reliable 115,000 volt transmission system. Construction on the new substation got into full swing early in 2004. The new substation was completed in June of 2004. Both of the old substations have now been retired. The old substation transformers that contained the PCB contaminated oil have been disposed of by an EPA qualified disposal facility.
